The Use of the Promises

1. What nature will the promises of God communicate to the life of the individual who receives them?
“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” 2 Peter 1:4.
2. In view of the promises that have been given, what exhortation is made by the apostle Paul?
“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Cor. 7:1.
3. How far will these promises reach in saving men?
“Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him.” Heb. 7:25.
4. How general is the invitation to come?
“I Jesus have sent Mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst, come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Rev. 22:16, 17.
5. What promise of rest is made in connection with the invitation to come?
“Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Matt. 11:28-30.
6. What protection is promised to those who come to the Master and find this rest?
“Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed; neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of Hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called. . . . No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of Me, saith the Lord.” Isa. 54:4, 5, 17.
7. In view of this complete destruction of sin, what has He promised to all His children?
“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and His servants shall serve Him: and they shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads.” Rev. 22:3, 4.
Note.— Think of what it means for an individual to be so completely cleansed and so absolutely freed from all traces of sin, that he can stand unabashed in the presence of the infinitely righteous and pure God and behold His face. This text in itself shows the mighty power of transformation and the complete cleansing that will have been given to every redeemed soul.
