Out-of-Doors
With an introduction by the famous author and lecturer Jacob Riis
THE book is permeated with a wholesome outdoor spirit. To read it is like getting a whiff of fresh mountain air. The writer is evidently in love with God's great out-of-doors, and has a way of making others fall in love with it, too. He points out the supreme value of fresh air from the point of view of health preservation. He shows that the morning walk, garden-making, camping, and other forms of open-air recreation are really remarkably effective remedies for common physical ills, and that open-air sleeping has done wonders in building up the health. He also discusses the serious moral and social problems growing out of the tendency to leave the country and crowd into the large cities. Education comes in for its share of attention, and is shown to consist of something more than book knowledge. In a chapter on “The Higher Ministry of Field and Wood,” we are reminded of the spiritually uplifting influences to be found out-of-doors, and are led to see nature telling the story of God's love and care. Altogether it is an inspiring book with a message of peace and power straight from God's out-of-doors.
