Tobacco and Christian Fellowship

Pitiable, isn’t it, to hear from a professed Christian minister the following words reported of the Rev. Dr. Locke of Rutherford, New Jersey? “It feels good to be among Christian men who have red blood and backbone enough to smoke a cigar. It argues well for religion, for man’s religion. Nothing can be more conducive to good fellowship than the fragrance of a good cigar. It is an anomalous thought in our American religion. Certain branches of the Protestant church have utterly tabooed tobacco in the past. Such methods will not win men to Christ.” It may safely be said that one who will glorify tobacco, will preach nicotin-saturated sermons. One who knows so little of Christian fellowship as to find better fellowship in a cigar, certainly knows very little about true Christianity. His religion is truly “man’s religion,” “American religion,” but not the religion of Jesus Christ.
