Opposition to the Whipping Post

One of the blue law bills before the California Legislature is that wife beaters shall be whipped with a six-tailed whip, not to exceed thirty lashes; but the suffragette lobbyists at Sacramento are strongly opposed to it. One of them, Mrs. Helen Moore, said: “Men seem to think that legal suasion is more powerful than moral suasion. We take an entirely different view. The establishment of the whipping-post would serve to brutalize the victim even more if possible.” And she is right about it. It is a step backward toward the Dark Ages.
