We omit in this week's reading the story of the misfortune of Dinah and the awful sin of Judah. Among the specially strong features in the week's reading is the victory gained by Jacob through faith, in his wrestling at the Brook Jabbok with the Angel of Jehovah, when his name was changed from that of Jacob, “the supplanter,” to Israel, “the prevailer with God.” From that time, the old patriarch's life was more peaceful. He goes back again to Bethel, but before he does this, he and his household put away all their foreign gods and their foolish trinkets. Chapter 36 gives us the generations of Esau, and the rest of the week is taken with a part of the always interesting story of Joseph, whom the Lord was fitting for a preserver of the holy Seed. Psalms 7, 8, 9 are excellent spiritual lessons of God's power and wisdom and goodness.
