The Strongest Fortress of All

By Delwin Rees Buckner
The nations of this whirlpool world confide In giant guns that soon must rend or rust: Or mammoth Dreadnoughts, plated with a crust Of toughest steel, which menacingly ride, Like monster bulldogs, on the plastic tide, And sniff for feather foes in which to thrust Their lead-filled cannon fangs; or else they trust In frowning forts where men may better hide. But I hope not in works of man's own hand, In which each valiant, sword-armed warrior boasts— No matter what his state, his race, or creed. I have a fortress that will ever stand Invincible,—the mighty Lord of Hosts To whom I flee in every time of need.
