Our Friend

By Worthie Harris Holden
The heart craves friendship, for its Maker reckoned That each some friend should know— Some kindred spirit on whom in communion Its secrets to bestow.
But God alone can be the Friend of sinners, To rescue them from death,— A power for virtue and a balm for sorrow, Who grants their every breath.
A Friend unchallenged when we tread the threshold Of death or grim despair, A spirit who records each prayer unuttered And wings its comfort there.
O, Friend of sinners! dearer name ne'er given To light our night of wo; No word of mortals e'er can voice Thy praises, But each Thy heart can know.
