Prepare War.

We are told that the United States battle-ship “Pennsylvania” is the greatest vessel of its kind floating, or will be when she is launched. The length is 600 feet on water-line, over all 618 feet, breadth 97 feet ½ inch, draft 28 feet 10 inches, displacement 31,400 tons, and speed on four-hour trial 21 knots. It has for a heavy battery twelve 14-inch guns; besides this four submerged torpedo tubes supported by a torpedo defense battery of twenty-one 5-inch guns. Fully equipped for service, the cost is estimated at $12,000,000. It will be armed with 18-inch plates. Engines, reciprocating, or turbines, with oil-burning boilers of the water-tube type. This is called by some a “peace persuader,” but when the time of Armageddon comes, the “Pennsylvania” will be in use, if she does not grow old and is replaced by some larger monster before that time.
