Ultraviolet Rays Sterilize Water and Milk
It has been found by French experimenters that the ultra violet rays of light, which make no impression on the sense of vision, they are so short, will sterilize foul drinking water and make it safe to drink, and will also sterilize milk and other liquids. In this work the rays are more effective than ozone. The application of the principles is said to be very simple,—a mercury vapor lamp immersed in the water to be sterilized. In one test germs of the polluted water of the River Seine were in five minutes destroyed to a distance of two feet by an immersed Cooper-Hewitt lamp of 110 volts. Of course, when the water is confined, sterilization will proceed much more rapidly.
