Poet Joaquin Miller Dies

Cincinnatus Heine (“Joaquin”) Miller, the “Poet of the Sierras,” miner, lawyer, express messenger, editor, judge, journalist, died at his home, The Heights, near Oakland, February 17, at the age of 72. He was a native of Indiana. Unique, eccentric, inconsistent, he was nevertheless a great poet. English critics have considered his poem on Columbus, “Sail On,” the greatest of his poetic productions. But the poem on the earthquake in San Francisco was great, and his “Mothers of Men” has taken hold of many hearts. On the night of his death his wife sang him to sleep with “Nearer My God to Thee.”
