The Only True Unity

WHEN real unity exists in any of the various relations of life, it is not necessary to constantly be attesting to the fact; for when such unity really exists, it is so evident that it needs no proof of its existence. No outward profession of unity can ever be substituted for the Christian unity which has been so clearly outlined by our Saviour in His remarkable prayer for His disciples, recorded in the seventeenth chapter of John. A union that simply consists in federating together certain religious organizations in a legislative way, can never take the place of that union which has the seal of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit upon it.
True Christianity is a matter of the heart, and the external organization is the outgrowth of such an admirable relation.
God’s Word is designed under the guiding influence of the Holy Spirit to be a great unifier; and any so-called unity without that foundation is not the product of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The words of Jesus in His wonderful prayer for His followers throughout all ages are: “They have kept Thy words;” “Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy Word is truth;” “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word; that they all may be one.” From these inspired statements, it is plainly to be seen that true unity depends upon faith in the unchanging and infallible Word of God.
