The Angel of Reward

By Violet Miriam Beck

By Violet Miriam Beck

There came one night the angel of reward. He stood with folded hands and lowered wings, And said: “I bring you message from the Lord, Who knoweth all His children's sufferings.

“His eyes have watched when thou hast smiled with cheer, While tears of pain were pressing ’neath thine eyes; He hath beheld thy conquering of fear; He saw the hidden, loving sacrifice.

“Already hath He blessed thee with His love, And shown thee tenderness that few have known; He gave thee peace the world knows little of, And calleth thee especially His own.

“He biddeth me to say that through the pain, Thou art become a blessing unto men.”
