Municipal Terminal Markets

Mayor Gaynor, of New York City, sent abroad Mrs. L. Marie Black, a member of his terminal market commission, to study European conditions to help solve the high cost of living. Mrs. Black has returned. She declares that 45 per cent of the cost of foodstuffs paid by consumers can be charged against the cost of handling commissions, etc. She advocates municipal terminal markets, that is, markets in which the people can bring their produce directly to the consumer and thus cut out the middleman. She declared that provision for terminal markets would be one of the leading economic questions in all American cities of size in the near future. We believe she is right.
