A Masterpiece of Satan

“A Masterpiece of Satan” is what the Christian Statesman, the organ of the National Reform party, calls the Sunday paper. It is not so characterized because it is worse than the average paper; for “it is no worse;” “much of it is excellent,” the Statesman declares, but “the grave objection to it is that it preempts sacred time.” Now, if it be true that the Sunday paper is a “masterpiece of Satan” because “it preempts sacred time,” what shall we say of Sunday, which has preempted the place that belongs to God, the Creator? The Sabbath is the seventh day, not the first day, of the week. To apply the Sabbath law to Sunday is an utter perversion of the Scripture.
