Harriman’s Plain Funeral

Mr. Harriman was buried like a plain citizen. Seven conveyances followed the hearse to the rock-hewn grave in the little country churchyard in the Ramapo Hills in Orange County, New York. Most of the people who attended the funeral were his neighbors and former employees. The plain wooden pews of the church were crowded with people of the country, who sat with millionaires from New York City. At 3:30 New York time, and 12:30 San Francisco time, for one minute, every locomotive on the entire Harriman system, every ferryboat, and every water craft was brought to a stop, with the suspension of all labor in the railway offices and shops, as a tribute to their dead leader.
