Galveston’s Remarkable Commercial Progress

“The Galveston Daily News” of September 1, containing forty-four pages, is largely filled with notes of the progress made by the great city on the bay since its rebuilding and the reorganization of its government. It now leads the world in export cotton, and is the second city in the United States in the value of its foreign commerce; an increase of 882 per cent of commerce in 20 years. The bank clearings of the year amounted to more than $689,000,000; an increase over the previous year of $31,000,000. From all that we can learn there has been real progress and reform in the growing southern city.
