President Taft’s Toast

President Taft sent the following toast for the San Francisco Portola Festival: “Since Portola looked through the Golden Gate on the descending sun, San Francisco has twice become the imperial city of the Pacific; first, by the energy of a pioneer race and steady growth into the Western metropolis; second, after complete destruction by the greedy flames and in the face of insurmountable obstacles, by regeneration as rapid and complete as to be the wonder of the world. May her future growth be as remarkable as her past, and may her civic righteousness and the individual happiness of her citizens keep pace with it.” San Francisco ought to drink it in the purest of water. She will drink it in blood-red wine and stronger drink.
