The Worst Tyrant

There's something bitter where there's something sweet; Oft lieth near the choice pineapple cone, Within the grass, some serpent coiled alone, Which guards, like a cruel despot, his retreat. The rich banana, aromatic, king Of fruits, as amber as the tropic sun, Within its bunch oft holds the scorpion, His tail upraised to give the painful sting. The hollow tree contains the honeycomb, Its guardians, the watchful, jealous bees; But he who fain would taste must first be stung. O, family innocence within the home, God keep thee from the venomed calumny That comes from the ungovernable tongue.
