A Better Rendering

WE heard recently a responsive reading of Ex. 15:1-19 in a Sabbath-school. The version used was the common one, as most of the people taking part possessed only the King James, but we could not help feeling that that congregation lost out. The American Standard Revised is so much fuller in expression. Moses’ song is not in praise of some lord. Egypt had lords many, and gods many; Moses was exalting the true God whose name is “Jehovah.” Take for instance verse 3: “The LORD” is not His name, even tho we write it in small capitals, but “Jehovah” is His name, the great ever-present God, in contradistinction to all earthly powers.
“Who is like unto Thee, [not “O Lord,” but] O Jehovah, among the gods? Who is like Thee, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders? Jehovah shall reign for ever and ever.”
How much better is another reading in verse 9, “my desire” in the American Version rather than “my lust” as in the Authorized Version. And this is a sample of many other instances.
