According to a cablegram from London to the Chicago Tribune, it is said that a wealthy member of American society has made himself very unpopular in London because of his sins which have resulted in the suicide of a woman. But an Englishman indicates that this is not because of greater horror of sinfulness on the part of the English people. He remarks: “English ideas are peculiar. It is possible to do indescribable things and yet find toleration. For instance, everybody knows of a certain member of society who keeps a regular Turkish harem not a hundred yards from Oxford Street and that he imported it from the East after traveling there, yet nobody cuts him. From the point of view of morality he is perhaps more blamable than the millionaire we were speaking of, yet nevertheless the latter is considered beyond the pale.” All these things would discourage the man who loves justice and equity did he not know that there lies before us a court at which all things will be equally balanced and every one shall receive his just reward with no partiality.
