Not Mine the Praise

IF I can reach a heart, swing back the door, And let a ray of light shine from above; If I can drop but one sweet word of love, Where hate abode and tyrannized before; If I can ease a heartache or a pain, Prevent, or wipe away, a falling tear, The world is better for my being here; My life has not been wholly lived in vain; But tho I help some plodding pilgrim on; Altho I cheer my neighbor with a smile, I ask that thanks may not be given me, But to that One who aids at dusk and dawn, Who, brother-like, stands by in every trial, Who well can aid, for He was tried as we.
