Women Outnumber Men in Church Attendance
The new census bulletin has come to hand, upon which we will make further remarks in the future. We note this one point, that a far larger number of women go to church than men. Out of the church-membership in the United States, of nearly thirty-three millions, the males form 43.1 per cent of the attendance, against 56.9 per cent females. In the Roman Catholic Church it is nearly one half, the male per cent being 49.3, the female, 50.7 per cent. Among the Protestants alone there were 39.3 per cent male; 60.7 per cent female. Of Christian Scientists only 27.6 per cent were males; among the Shakers 21.3 per cent males; while in the Greek Orthodox Church 93.9 per cent were males. Church-members in 1900 formed 39.1 per cent of the population, as against 32.7 per cent in 1890. The Roman Catholic increase was far greater than that of the Protestants.
