Fears

FEAR of the future renders vain Pleasures that come to-day; And hours of useless care and pain To fears we often pay.
Fear bids us shrink from duty’s part, Shows giant foes to face; A traitor he, if in the heart He finds abiding-place.
E’en Envy whispers unto Fear That Fame, discerning worth, Another’s name shall write more clear Upon her scroll of earth.
Aye, jealous Fear can never see God gave another more, And more demands the work shall be Before life’s day is o’er.
God knows the gifts that should be ours, He chooses them for all, And some fear loss of all their powers If downward once they fall.
Fear laughs at them with scornful eyes, But failure is not crime; And those who gain new gifts arise And climb the heights sublime.
They hear the Master’s great command, And upward, onward go; But e’en the bravest, strongest, band Find Fear the greatest foe.
