Love to God and Man Requires the Gospel

In the new religion which Dr. Charles W. Eliot, ex-president of Harvard University, predicts, one of the great principles will be love to God and love to man; and yet he tells us it will be a religion “not based upon any authority.” That sounds real good, but the great simple fact is, as the Scriptures declare, that the carnal heart is not subject to the law of God, but is at enmity with that law. Man of himself does not love the law. In the very nature of the case he can not of himself love the law. Only as the Spirit of God is shed abroad in his heart, does love come in, and that can come only through the regenerating power of the Gospel of Christ.
