Desert Roses

By Delwin Rees Buchner
On swaying hump-knolls, dromedaries bear Their freight of ivory and dates and plumes O’er trackless wastes where nothing ever blooms, Their hoofs high hurling, in the ambient air, Sand-clouds as on they hasten, unaware That, far away, where that gray mountain looms Like one of Egypt’s monumental tombs, Fierce nomad bandits chuckle in their lair.
Sad desert, now in thy disheveled lap Thou holdest only dust of man and beast; But few unwept Decembers more will close Ere in thy sky her wings the dove will clap, While a sublimer sun within the east Will magnify the colors of thy rose.
