For Religious Freedom

A despatch from Rome under date of March 15 declares that a papal encyclical, issued on that day, refers to the United States as “the ideal country for religious freedom;” but if ultramontane ideas ruled in America, there would be no religious freedom save for the Papacy, and that is a religious freedom which has freedom only for those who espouse it. True freedom recognizes the right of the other man. Freedom in America was not born of the Papacy, nor of papal principles.
