The First Dead Autumn Leaf

By Delwin Res Buckner
O, such a sorrow, almost past belief, Do sad, heart-heavy Eve and Adam feel, As, sobbing, in the still, soft sand they kneel, And gently lift the fallen autumn leaf, Their souls big with unutterable grief As they behold where death hath stamped his seal, Aware that he from hill and vale must steal Each living thing—an omnipresent thief. More tears, that day, did our first parents shed Than we weep now when gazing on a face Of wax, 'mid many a wan, white floral wreath, Asleep within its cushioned casket bed, Till Michael's trump shall sound through starry space, And bloodless, breathless clay once more will breathe.
