Lot’s Departure from Sodom

Then rose the ancient patriarch, and passed Forth from the city, filled with awe and fear. And now the heavens, tho with no clouds o’ercast, A wild and terrible aspect seem to wear; And ever and anon a lurid glare Streams with a meteor-light athwart the sky; And, borne upon the hot and burdened air, From unseen spirits comes a fearful cry Of desolation, telling but too late To the blaspheming host their well-deserved fate.
—George W. Nind.
