Diseases Caused by Protozoa

Dr. Clifford D. Sweet, of the University-of-California Medical Department, in a recent paper shows the research work that he has been doing along the lines of bacteriology, showing the large field of the numerous and dangerous diseases caused by protozoa, those tiny forms of animal life so exceedingly minute that they can not be seen by the most powerful microscopes yet invented. He tells us that malaria, sleeping-sickness, and other sicknesses of men and of animals, are caused by protozoa, introduced into the body by bites of insects. Smallpox, rabies, infantile paralysis, and chicken-pox of poultry, are all supposed to be caused by protozoa. The organisms responsible for these latter diseases have never yet been discovered. They are so small that they will pass through a porcelain filter which strains out everything larger in diameter than one twenty-five-thousandth of an inch; from which the wise man ought to conclude that the best way of meeting these things is to live above them.
