The Goulds and the Grinding Poor

The divorce suit of the Howard Goulds has revealed a little of the inner life of some of the rich. According to the testimony taken in the case the whole Gould estate is valued at $80,000,000, from the income of which Howard Gould gets over $700,000 a year. Mrs. Gould's gown bill amounts to $40,000 a year. The awful contrast between the grinding poor in some of our cities and this affluence is enough to make wise people think. And yet this income is not a very large one compared with some others that might be mentioned.
