Become Not the Bond-Servants of Men
“Become Not the Bond-Servants of Men.”—This is the admonition of the apostle Paul found in 1 Cor. 7:23. This does not mean that we should not serve men, for that is a vital essential of Christian character. Jesus came to minister to others, to serve them. The text does not mean that men should not organize and cooperate in God’s work or work for humanity, but it does mean that no man should sell himself to any man or set of men when responsibility to God stands first. Danger lies in both extremes. Obstinate, big-headed independence in non-essential methods and plans is to be deplored as well as the slavish submission of manhood to the dictation of others. Both classes afflict society, especially the latter. Society is weakening and crumbling by the increase of men who are slaves of men. The only true men are those whose supreme headship is in Jesus Christ, and who are bound together by the receiving of His life and are united in the heralding of His Gospel.
