Mrs. Lulu Wightman’s masterly address before the Missouri Legislature is reproduced in the July Monthly. Mrs. Wightman delivered this address “American Birthright of ‘Religious Liberty’” in other capital cities of the Central States as well. Another audience represented by thousands of SIGNS readers will appreciate her words as tho they heard them from her lips direct.
This July number of the SIGNS MONTHLY might very properly be called a “Liberty number,” for we are giving considerable space to the enunciation of those foundation principles which made this great Republic of ours a possibility. There is no better way to show our love and patriotism for our country, the very destiny of which is subject to our attitude on these principles, than by circulating this splendid magazine which so clearly shows the danger toward which we are so rapidly drifting. The following sentiments are being taught the nation’s coming leaders in some of our universities to-day: “Men are no more born equal and free than they are born of one size.” “The Declaration of Independence is a delusion, and the hope of equality fantastic.” A striking cartoon shows these same professors pulling the statue of liberty from its pedestal, and other quotations of theirs equally as strong are given. What can the logical outcome of such teaching be? Won’t you help us open the eyes of thinking people? We have manufactured just the thing needed. We must depend on you to do the rest.
Besides the religious liberty feature, the Home, Temperance, Bible-Readings, and Current Topics departments will appear as usual. Under this latter head is a significant article entitled “Why England Fears a German Invasion.”
Here are just a couple of extracts from letters: “God wonderfully helped me this month. I sold 40 each day I went out. Please send me a hundred more. I must tell you there are a lot of people in Toronto who like that magazine. I have had blessed experiences in selling them, and also a blessed chance of telling the people the truth.”
“A gentleman (one of my regular customers) told me to be sure and not forget his magazine as it was a source of great help to him in teaching his Sunday-school class. He said he got so many good things out of it. It is no trouble at all to sell 1,600 magazines in Portland. So please find $12 enclosed for fourth shipment of magazines.”
