A Way Out of the Dilemma

Despite the inward feelings of both civil and ecclesiastical authorities, this unique but delicate situation created by the queen’s zealous activity in bringing the word of God within reach of the common people, was winked at for the time being. A year or two later a layman undertook to issue the New Testament in the vernacular by first running his translation in small instalments through the columns of a daily newspaper in Athens. This action afforded a way out of the dilemma without directly opposing the course of the queen. The people took the initiative, and what of riot and bloodshed that followed, with the accompanying revelations of the real spirit animating rulers and people on this all-important question, constitutes the most interesting and instructive part of our story, to be told in our next.
