Catholic and Protestant Friendliness.
Recently W. Bourke Cockran, bishop of a Catholic diocese, was invited by a company of eight hundred Protestant ministers to address them, much to his surprise. In his speech he said: “As a public speaker this invitation to speak to a body of this kind is the most satisfactory of my entire life. That a Roman Catholic, quite well known for his adherence to that faith, should be invited here to address you, is very satisfying to me. In this age we may rejoice in those Christian confidences we have together in common, rather than in quarrels of faith.” Whether a matter of rejoicing or not, it is true that modern Protestantism and Catholicism have much in common; and when we consider that history demonstrates the truth of the boast of the Catholic Church that she never changes, we see clearly which has made the compromise. There are few “quarrels of faith” because there are so few differences.
