Five Miles of Panama Canal Open

Five miles of the Panama Canal is open to navigation. Two American steamships were recently allowed to pass through the channel, which is 440 feet wide for the first mile and 500 feet wide for the remaining four miles. Most of the channel has been excavated to a depth of fifty feet at mean tide. This is on the Pacific end of the canal.
