The South Pole.

—Lieutenant Ernest Shackelton of the British navy has planted the Union Jack within 111 miles of the South Pole. He was unable to push on to the limit on account of lack of ponies and provisions. He located the Southern magnetic pole, Lat. 72° 23′ and Long. 154° East. His object was not to discover the South Pole or the place where it would be if there were such a thing, but in the interests of geological science.
