Taft’s Inauguration Amid a Blizzard
Inauguration Day in Washington and the East was met by a howling blizzard which tied up trains, blew down telegraph and telephone wires, and paralyzed business generally. The ceremonies of the day were held inside the Senate Chambers. All passed off nicely and in due order. The great ball at night, at which it is said that 40,000 persons were present a part of the time, was a blaze of glory, and the city was resplendent for hours with fire works, in which battle-ships in the air were striking features. Everything about the inauguration told how far the nation has drifted from the democratic simplicity of the early days of the republic. Mr. Taft stated in his address that the Roosevelt policies would be carried out, and declared for a big navy.
