The Glory of the Serving
By Llewellyn A. Morrison
The spirit of the towel and the basin,
And the cool, refreshing water, pure and sweet,
Manifested by the minist’ring oblation
Of the Master in the washing of the feet;
Or by Mary, in the box of ointment, broken
For the love of Him for whom the love was pour’d,
Is the test of every action, trust and token
Of our sonship in the kingdom of the Lord. We forget the limitations on our serving
When we fee another hand to bear our balms;
For the Holy One who marketh all deserving
Credits but the self-bestowment in our alms;
Thus we miss the gracious Spirit’s inspiration,
And we lose the subtle growth it doth afford,—
So we never know the blessed exaltation
Of our service in the kingdom of the Lord. O, Beloved of Jehovah, bow before Him!
Seek the open heart that comprehends the truth!
All who learn this pregnant lesson and adore Him
Find the secret of divine, immortal youth;
For the glory of the deed is in the doing,
And the witness of the will, within the word;
And the life of life hath infinite renewing
In the comfort of the kingdom of the Lord.
