Rising Estimates for the Panama Canal

The original estimate on the digging and building of the Panama Canal was $139,000,000; later it was raised to $250,000,000, and now $500,000,000 is asked for. Quite a number are in favor of the sea-level canal, believing that it would be in the long run much cheaper and better, and among them are competent engineers.
