Relief for Earthquake Sufferers

The latest news from the earthquake is that thousands are dying from pneumonia, meningitis, injuries, and starvation. Many were killed by a tidal wave, thirty feet high, which washed over Messina and Reggio. Twenty cities, at least, are reported to have burned after the earthquake. All wagon roads and railroads were destroyed, and access to the stricken districts was by water. Chilling rain-storms followed the earthquake. There is a splendid response from all parts of the civilized world to the needs of the sufferers, and one of the great difficulties is that it will not reach there soon enough. The United States Government appropriated eight hundred thousand dollars.
