The Mother and the Child.

No person who ever walked the earth, save our Lord Jesus, has appealed more strongly to devout artists than the Virgin Mary. That superstition has had its share in it, is true without question. Yet, we are glad that the great and beautiful thought of motherhood is emphasized as in the four pictures of the mother and the child which appear on pages 6 and 7 of this issue. The human mother brings our Lord's humanity nearer; it makes Him seem more like a brother beloved to know that His infant head was pillowed upon the bosom of a modest, pure, loving, earthly mother. She is painted by different artists as representing different nationalities. She was a representative mother. Jesus is represented in many national types. He lived and died for all; He is the Saviour of all. The thought of His infancy ought to bring Him nearer, and lead us more than ever to regard tenderly, as did He, the mothers.
