Petitions

Petitions in great number have been sent in to the Senate, praying for the expulsion of Senator Reed Smoot of Utah, on the ground that he is a polygamist. Senator Hoar has taken the position that the petitioners are entirely out of order; that the question is purely a judicial one; and that the people have no right to petition the Senate in reference thereto. Other senators have taken up the matter in defense of the right of the petitioners in this matter, and there is indication that considerable time will be spent in determining apostle Smoot’s right to a seat in the Senate chamber.
