Mormon Sealing and a Widow’s Claim
In a lawsuit in Salt Lake City the evidence seems clear that plural marriages are still clearly in vogue under the doctrine of sealing. In the case in question a Miss A. when very ill was sealed to a Dr. Park for eternity, that she might have a resurrection. She recovered and married another man, a policeman, Mr. H., and is the mother of five children. During all this time, the man to whom she was sealed, Dr. Park, was still alive. When he died, Mrs. H. filed suit against Dr. Park's executors for a widow's share of the estate. It is a fight within the Mormon Church. According to the news despatch, Charles W. Penrose, a high priest, admitted “that, when a couple are sealed, it is optional with them before the ceremony is performed, whether they are to live together or not, and that should they change their minds after the ceremony has been performed and cohabit, their relations in the eye of the church and under the laws would not be unlawful. He also brought out the intimation that a man or woman who sealed for eternity could marry by the State laws.”
