The Spread of Opium and Morphine Addiction

Timothy, the organ of “The St. Luke Society,” makes the statement that there are 60,000 men and women in the city of Chicago known to be addicted to the use of morphine, and that 15,000 others are smoking opium. Of course no statistics of this kind can be absolute, but they are sadly I turned away I did not thoughtful people shudder no heart to work on the lines of efforts against the corruptions of perverted appetite. It is estimated that five per cent. of the population of hamlet, town, or city throughout this great country are addicted to the use of morphine or opium in some form. What per cent. of the population, then, is harmed by this addiction, directly and remotely, God alone knows.
