Overcome Evil with Good

“God hath called us to peace.” 1 Cor. 7:15. With whom?—In that particular place the apostle is giving counsel to believers who have unbelieving husbands or wives; but in another place he enjoins us that, “if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” Rom. 12:18. But suppose that they will not live peaceably with me? must I not stand up for my rights? must I not defend myself? Well, the apostle anticipates that question, and adds: “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Verses 19-21.
