French Government and the Vatican

The breach continues to widen between the French Government and the Vatican. The pope had ordered certain bishops to withdraw from France and return to Rome. According to the agreement between France and the Vatican, this could not be done without the consent of France, and the French Government refused permission for the bishops to leave France. One of the summoned bishops, however, has obeyed the call of the Vatican and gone to Rome. The others are threatened with punishment in case they do not obey.
