Simplicity and the Spirit

The costly vestments of the minister, or the fine apparel of a lay disciple, is not evidence of the presence or guidance of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist was “filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb,” and “was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel;” and when he went forth “in the spirit and power of Elijah” to preach the Gospel, he “had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins.” He also lived simply in the matter of food. He drank “neither wine nor strong drink,” and “his meat was locusts and wild honey.” With all this simplicity, the Lord testified of John that no greater prophet had ever arisen.
