Alaska

Alaska.— The Moravian, in noting the mission work of the Moravian Church in Alaska, incidentally says that “Alaska is fast becoming as splendid a field for home mission work as it now is for foreign mission work. It is an enormously rich country. The world is just beginning to realize the value of Alaska’s limitless, but undeveloped resources. Unfavorable climatic conditions can not keep the fortune-hunters out of that land of gold. [What a grand thing it would be if that could be said of more gold-hunters.] The revenues even now being derived from the industries in that cold country run up into the millions annually. The white population is increasing at a remarkable rate. The government is fully aware of the importance of Alaska. Liberal appropriations are made for educational purposes, for transportation facilities, and for mail service. Washington has already heard of the scheme of making a state out of the territory of Alaska. It very likely will become a state some time. The church that wishes to be strongly entrenched in the future state, had better begin its work now. Now is the time for church extension in Alaska. Earnest activity and self-sacrificing labor and persistent prayer for God’s blessing are bound to bring a rich reward.”
