GOING BACKWARD.

A FEW years ago there was no end of boasting of our progress, and no end of pity for the races that preceded us on the stage of life. But it looks as if Americans are returning to superstition and barbarism. American cities are full of people who will accept from any swarthy man wearing a turban, any maudlin absurdity that he chooses to teach, as containing the wisdom of the occult system of the Orient.
A few weeks ago a lady of culture in Chicago, being taught that “soul is everything,” and the body must be subjugated, and all that kind of thing, entered into a fast of forty days, and came out a physical wreck, and a raving maniac. And yet this Persian fakir gathers disciples who talk of hidden mysteries, contact with the unknowable, and the attainment of supernatural powers, by means of this wonderful remnant of a barbaric age. Men seem ready to believe anything but the truth of God. —Watchword and Truth.
