Socialist Gains in Germany and Republican Gains in Spain
The Socialists are making great gains in Germany, and the Republicans have made wonderful gains in Spain, and consequently there is consternation in official circles in both these countries. It now seems probable that the Socialists will control one-quarter of the votes in the German Reichstag, while in the new Spanish Cortes there will be thirty-two Republicans in place of seventeen as in the last session. In Germany all other parties are working with all the power they control to check the Socialist advance, but seem comparatively powerless. It is felt that the consternation at the Socialist gains in Germany has had something to do with the emperor's latest visit to the pope. The marked deference shown the pope on this occasion will make the Centrist (Catholic) party in Germany stronger for the emperor.
